Q. Should I look for a smaller 1/2 scale for my 5 year old?
A. I don't recommend 1/2 scale starter acoustic
guitars. Its a matter of physics, the shorter the scale length, the more string
tension (and adjustment) effects tuning. 1/2 scale guitars are impossible
to tune properly.
What we do here at the store with very small students is start them on a 3/4,
and
Capo the second fret. This accomplishes two things:
ONE - It makes for a shorter reach.
TWO - It makes it easier to press down the strings
Q. A local guitar teacher says we should have our Left-handed child play right handed, do you agree?
A. Find a new Guitar Teacher. While the guitar is a two handed instrument, one side of the brain more easily understands rhythm. Left handed players should strum or pick with the Left Hand.
