In 1973 Robert Hird joined Virgil Lay in his already very successful Akron Ohio guitar repair and customizing shop located in the basement below another business. Virgil had an uncanny knack for finding new and innovative ways of customizing guitars faster and with factory quality more than any other repair facility in the region.
Then, sometime in 1980 Virgil found a way to stabilize thin slinky rock strings so that they would stay in tune under stress of pushing, vibrato and modern playing conditions.

Building, and constantly innovating their own unique string machines has been a definite factor in their success. Such discoveries as "Universal Dampering", "Adjustable Pin Chuck", "Negative Pressure Anvils", and a host of others have produced the world famous SIT Strings that professional and amateurs alike the world over have come to depend on.

Today, SIT Strings is known and distributed around the world in about 56 different countries. And through it all, it was strongly believed that each and every string had to have the individual quality of the best SIT string ever made.
Far from growing complacent, SIT is enthusiastically experimenting and developing more string innovations. And only the imagination can guess when, and what, the next discovery will be.
