In 1973 Robert Hird joined Virgil Lay in his already very successful
Akron Ohio guitar repair and customizing shop located in the basement
below another business. Virgil had an uncanny knack for finding new
and innovative ways of customizing guitars faster and with factory
quality more than any other repair facility in the region. In 1980 "Stay-In-Tune" Strings was born, and Virgil and Robert found a host of improvements both in sound and playability that could be done to modern musical instruments strings. Large companies had grown complacent with an established market, so it seemed SIT could be a new string company in the market even though it couldn't compete with their size and momentum. |

Building, and constantly innovating their own unique string machines has been a definite factor in their success. Such discoveries as "Universal Dampering", "Adjustable Pin Chuck", "Negative Pressure Anvils", and a host of others have produced the world famous SIT Strings that professional and amateurs alike the world over have come to depend on. |

that each and every string had to have the individual quality of the
best SIT string ever made. |
