Abe Wechter has been designing and building guitars for 30 years. It has been a long journey from his first guitar shop in Seattle, Washington, to his current shop in a rural Michigan town named Paw Paw.

Over the course of his career, Abe designed and built handmade guitars for artists like John McLaughlin, Al DiMeola, John Denver, Earl Klugh, BB King, Steve Howe, Jonas Hellborg and many other fine players. He spent 9 years building Kasha model guitars with the late Richard Schneider during which time he also worked as a model-maker and designer for Gibson Guitars. From 1984 until 1996 Abe built custom guitars in his own shop, developing a reputation as one of the world's finest craftsmen and guitar designers.
In 1994 Abe built a prototype of an innovative new acoustic design, the Pathmaker, and realized that it would have application far beyond the high price range he was working in. As much as he enjoyed building custom guitars, Abe wanted to bring the Pathmaker design to professional and amateur guitar players who could not afford such expensive instruments.
After building out his back orders of handmade guitars and exploring various manufacturing options, Abe decided to set up a manufacturing facility in his hometown of Paw Paw, Michigan. In 1997 Wechter Guitars moved into a new 6000 square foot building and began manufacturing the Pathmaker model.
In 2000 Abe was able to set up manufacturing in China as well, so that Wechter Guitars could offer the Pathmaker at more affordable prices. Abe travels to Asia several times a year to oversee the production and to assure that the guitars are built to his specifications. He also researches the best possible amplification options from Asia. This has led to Wechter Guitars offering the Artec HT-TBL, manufactured in Korea, as well as the US made Fishman Prefix Plus.
The shop at 200 South Gremps street in Paw Paw has changed over the years. We now have a large inventory of Asian guitars ready for setup and shipping in addition to our guitar making tools. Our US built Elite guitars now include new models such as the single cutaway Florentine models and the Pathmaker Acoustic Bass.
But one thing is still unchanged - we are committed to continue to deliver innovation, quality and value, at prices working musicians can afford.
